What We Do to Keep a Referral Scheme Honest

Most referral programmes publish the reward and hide everything else. You find out about the caps when you hit one, and about the checks when a payment does not arrive.

That is a bad way to run something dealers are being asked to put their own name behind. If you send a mate at another forecourt to a piece of software, you have spent a bit of your reputation doing it, and you are entitled to know how the thing that pays you actually behaves.

So here is the machinery behind the Vehiso Referral Programme: every rule, and why it exists. Some of it makes the programme slightly less generous than it could be. All of it is there so the programme is still running, on the same terms, in two years.

The thirty day hold

Every amount you earn sits as "on hold" for thirty days before it becomes available to take.

Why it is there: a referred dealer can pay a bill and then be refunded. If we paid you the moment the money hit, we would then have to come back and ask for it, potentially after you had already spent it on your own invoice.

Thirty days is long enough to cover the realistic refund window. Nobody on this programme should ever get a message asking them to give money back, and the hold is how we make sure of that.

You can see the split on your account page: what is on hold, what is available, and when each amount matures.

The £25 minimum on cash withdrawals

You cannot withdraw less than £25 to a bank account.

Why it is there: fees, straightforwardly. Sending several separate small transfers costs more in bank charges than the transfers are worth, and that cost would have to come out of somewhere.

Note where the minimum does not apply. There is no minimum on invoice credit and no minimum on wallet credit, because that money never leaves Vehiso and there is nothing to charge for. If you have earned £8, it can come off your next bill tomorrow. It just cannot be wired to your bank on its own.

Twenty referred dealers a month

Each referrer can bring in up to twenty referred dealers in a calendar month.

Why it is there, and this is worth being precise about, because it is not what it looks like. It is not a budget. Since the reward is a share of money that has genuinely come in, more paying referrals is straightforwardly good for us. We are not trying to ration it.

It is a rate limit. It exists for the problem nobody has thought of yet. If something in the attribution logic goes wrong, or somebody finds a hole in the sign-up flow, twenty a month is the difference between noticing on Monday morning with twenty bad rows to sort out and noticing with two thousand. It is a blast radius, not a ceiling on your earnings.

Two details that matter. It counts dealers, not payments, so a referral that lands inside a month goes on earning for its full six months regardless of what the cap does afterwards. And if you ever do fill a month, you get an email telling you, rather than finding out from a number that quietly stopped moving.

No lifetime limit

There is no total cap on how many dealers you can refer or how much you can earn.

What happens at scale: past two hundred paying referrals, we will look at the account and probably get in touch about a partner arrangement, because somebody bringing in that volume is genuinely acting as a reseller and there is a better deal available than a standard referral rate.

The important part is what happens while that conversation goes on: the referrals keep earning. Nothing switches off, nothing is held pending a negotiation. A programme that turns off its most successful advocate the moment they become successful is not one anybody should recommend, and we would rather say so in public than find out how it feels in private.

The fraud checks

There are checks, and they look for the obvious things.

Signing yourself up a second time. A referral that shares a payment card with the referrer. A referral on a private email domain the referrer also uses. The patterns that show up when somebody has decided the fastest route to £29 is to become their own customer.

What happens when something is flagged: a person looks at it. Not an automatic refusal, not a silent zero on your account page. Plenty of flagged cases are perfectly legitimate, two dealers who share an office and a card being the obvious one, and an automated rule cannot tell the difference between that and an attempt at gaming. A human can.

The same goes for cash withdrawals. Every one is reviewed by a person before it is sent. It adds a day, and it means nothing goes out of the door that nobody has looked at.

Dealers only, not agencies

Agency accounts do not take part in the referral programme.

Why: agencies who build sites for dealers on Vehiso already have a commercial relationship with us, with its own terms. Stacking a referral reward on top of that would mean two arrangements covering the same introduction, which gets confusing for everyone and unfair to somebody. If you run an agency and want to talk about how introductions work on your side, that is a conversation to have with us directly.

Everything is written down

The Referral Programme Terms are published, and every number in this post matches them.

One thing worth saying about that: if a blog post and the terms ever disagree, the terms are the ones that count, but the blog post is the one you would quote back at us, and we know it. That is why these posts get checked against the terms rather than written from memory.

What we can change, and what that means for you

Being straight about this too. The reward rate, the hold period, the withdrawal minimum and both caps are settings. They can be changed without a software release.

That is normal for a programme like this, and it is how we can respond quickly if something is being abused. It also means the honest way to read any specific number in any article, including this one, is as the figure at the time of writing. The account page and the terms are always current.

What we are not going to do is change the deal on money already earned. A referral that has started earning earns on the terms it started on.

Why publish any of this

Because the dealers most worth having on a referral programme are the ones who have been stung before, and they are exactly the ones who read the rules first.

If you have been part of a scheme that paid well for three months and then found reasons not to, you already know which questions to ask. This post is those questions, answered before you have to ask them.

Your link is in your account under Billing, then Referral Programme. If you want the reasoning behind the reward's shape rather than its rules, that is in why we pay a share and not a bounty.
